Taming Defense Build Tier List
Ranked early, mid, and late survival builds for base layout, pet roster, and currency spend.
Surviving Taming Defense is a scheduling problem disguised as a tower defense game. You have daylight to place walls, assign pets with V/Q/T/U/Z commands, and spend Gold and Ruby before darkness tests everything. This build tier list ranks early, mid, and late loadouts the community uses—not copy-paste blueprints, but priorities that stay valid even when individual block types change in patches.
Builds are labeled S, A, or B within each phase. S-tier plans fail least often for their cost. A-tier plans work with good execution. B-tier plans are learning steps or budget placeholders.
Early builds (Days 1–7)
Goal: learn building controls, tame one defensive pet, and clear the first nights without overbuilding.
S-Tier — Compact Box + Guard Sentinel
Place a small rectangular shell with one deliberate choke. Leave interior space for crafting and pet feeding. Tame a pet that fits Guard Sentinel behavior from the Pet Tier List and bind it to slot 1 on your hotbar. During nights, select the pet, press Guard on the choke, and repair outer blocks between waves if safe.
Spend Gold on wall height before cosmetic floors. Redeem Codes for starter Gold and Ruby before shop purchases. This build teaches snap rotation (R) and hotbar swaps (X) without requiring a mega-base.
A-Tier — Follower Hunter + Minimal Walls
Skilled players kite with Follow and Attack outside a tiny shelter. Strong when you understand spawn timing but punishing if you chase too far. Drop to B-tier on laggy mobile connections.
B-Tier — Open Campfire
No real walls, pets on Follow only. Fine for tutorial learning; replace before Day 10.
Mid builds (Days 8–19)
Goal: funnel spawns, mix roles, and stock resources before The Lich begins hunting on Day 20.
S-Tier — Layered Choke + Tank Beast / AoE Cleaver
Add an outer ring and inner fallback line so breaches do not reach your crafting core. Assign Tank Beast on the outer choke and AoE Cleaver slightly behind for cluster damage. Use keys 1–6 to swap focus when one lane spikes.
Daytime priorities: repair outer layer, farm Gold, tame a backup pet if your main role is still C-tier from the pet list. Spend Ruby only on purchases that survive into late game—avoid flashy single-night boosts.
A-Tier — Dual Lane Split
Two narrow entrances with one Guard Sentinel each. Excellent in co-op when one player micros pets and another builds. Solo players may struggle to repair both lanes same-night.
B-Tier — Single Wall Stack
One thick wall line without funnel geometry. Works until enemy variety adds flank or jump behavior; upgrade before Day 20.
Late builds (Day 20+)
Goal: survive nightly Lich pressure and push toward the 365-day marathon stated on the official experience page.
S-Tier — Fallback Keep + Role Roster
Build a compact inner keep with storage, crafting, and a last-stand choke. Outer bases can sacrifice if nightly pressure spikes. Roster target: Tank Beast, AoE Cleaver, Support Healer, and one Glass DPS for burst when The Lich adds pressure. See Best Pets by Stage for slot timing.
Night routine: pre-assign Guard positions before sunset, carry repair materials on hotbar slots, and use Stay to reset overchasing pets between waves.

A-Tier — Mobile Reserve
Keep one pet on Follow to plug wall breaks while others hold lanes. High skill, high reward once Lich nights multiply spawn directions.
B-Tier — Glass Cannon Fort
All-in on Glass DPS behind minimal walls. Fast clears until one mistake ends the run—fun for experiments, not for account-safe streaks.
Gold vs Ruby spending by phase
| Phase | Gold focus | Ruby focus |
|---|---|---|
| Early | Basic walls, first tame upkeep | Save unless a code grant covers a clear S-tier role |
| Mid | Layered geometry, backup tame | One mid-tier pet or tool that matches S-tier archetype |
| Late | Inner keep, nightly repairs | Premium pets or gear tied to healer/tank roles |
Co-op adjustments
Online co-op (see facts) lets teammates split builder and commander jobs. Add +half tier to support and scout builds when a partner handles construction while you run Select All Pets ([V]) for coordinated pushes.

No build tier survives neglect. Revisit outer walls daily, match pets to roles—not names—and downgrade any layout that loses two consecutive nights without learning why.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
What is the best early Taming Defense build?
A compact box with one choke plus a Guard Sentinel pet on duty is the most reliable S-tier early build for new players learning wall placement and pet commands.
When should I upgrade from early to mid build?
Upgrade around Days 8–10 or when the first night breaches your outer layer. Add funnel geometry before Day 20 Lich hunts begin.
How do I prepare my base for Day 20?
Build layered chokes, assign Tank Beast and AoE roles, stock repair materials on hotbar slots, and read the Survive The Lich guide for nightly habits.
Should I spend Ruby on walls or pets first?
Walls define whether pets survive long enough to DPS. Fix choke geometry with Gold first, then spend Ruby on a pet that fills an S-tier role from the pet tier list.
Do these builds work in co-op?
Yes, with tweaks. Dual lane splits and mobile reserve builds gain value when one player builds and another commands pets using V, Q, T, U, and Z.
