Taming Defense Pet Tier List
Role-based S/A/B/C rankings for night defense, base guarding, and Lich-era survival.
This pet tier list ranks combat roles, not individual creature names. Taming Defense adds and retunes magical beasts often; a patch can buff one species and leave another behind. Archetypes like Tank Beast or Night Scout describe how a tame behaves once you issue Follow, Attack, Guard, or Stay commands. Use this page to decide where your Gold and Ruby belong before The Lich begins nightly hunts on Day 20.
Rankings reflect community reports from day exploration, base defense, and co-op servers. They are guidance, not guarantees. Test one swap at a time and log which night broke your wall line.
Ranking criteria
We score each archetype on five factors:
- Night wave clear speed — how fast the pet removes fodder before your walls take chip damage
- Survivability — time alive without player babysitting during Guard duty
- Command responsiveness — how reliably the pet stops chasing when you press Stay or Guard
- Scaling — usefulness from Day 1 through mid-game Ruby purchases
- Lich pressure — value once Day 20 introduces heavier nightly threats
Pets that excel at only one factor land in B or C unless that factor is critical for your build.
S Tier — core night anchors
Tank Beast
High health, slow movement, absorbs melee rushes at choke points. Pair with layered walls from the Build Tier List early section. Bind to a hotbar slot you can select with keys 1–6 and set Guard on the narrowest path. Solo players rate Tank Beast S-tier because it covers slow camera turns.
Guard Sentinel
Built for stationary defense: strong when assigned Guard on a wall gap while you repair during the day. Slightly less map mobility than Tank Beast but better focus fire on a single lane. Co-op groups often run one Sentinel per lane.
A Tier — reliable damage and control
AoE Cleaver
Area damage clears clustered night spawns. Falls off if enemies spread across multiple lanes without walls funneling them. Jump to S-tier behind a U-shaped choke; drop to B-tier on open bases.
Glass DPS
Extreme single-target burst, low health. A-tier when you micro with Attack then Stay before aggro pulls it into the dark. New players often lose Glass DPS to friendly overextension—respect the tier until your command habits improve.
B Tier — phase-dependent picks
Support Healer
Keeps nearby pets alive during long nights. B-tier in solo early game because one DPS often finishes fights faster than healing prevents damage. Rises toward A-tier in co-op when two players split tame and builder roles, or when you run multiple low-health Glass DPS units late.
Night Scout
Fast map movement for daytime resource runs and corpse retrieval. B-tier for pure defense because it trades bulk for speed. Strong on exploration days, weaker when The Lich forces full-base holds. See Best Pets by Stage for when scouts pay off.
C Tier — replace when you can
Unspecialized early tames that lack clear role identity sit here. They teach pet commands and slot management but should not anchor Day 20 nights. Feed them only until you capture a defined archetype from the tiers above.
Community chatter sometimes hypes rare spawns. If the creature does not map to tank, AoE, burst, heal, or scout behavior, treat hype as C-tier until you prove otherwise over three nights.
Role matrix by survival phase
| Phase | Priority roles | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Days 1–7 | Tank Beast, Night Scout | Learn commands; walls matter more than rarity |
| Days 8–19 | Guard Sentinel, Glass DPS | Funnel spawns before Lich milestone |
| Day 20+ | Tank Beast, AoE Cleaver, Support Healer | Nightly Lich pressure rewards layered roles |
| Late marathon | Mixed S/A roster | Ruby upgrades shift exact species, not jobs |
Investment tips
Spend Gold on feeding and basic gear for one S-tier role before spreading resources. Save Ruby for creatures that unlock mid-game slots or premium skills you will use past Day 20. Codes grant both currencies—redeem them before buying a pet you might replace in a week.
When taming, read How to Tame Pets for capture timing during daylight. Night taming is risky once waves escalate.

Revisit after every major patch. Archetype tiers stay stable longer than individual creature names, which is why this list labels roles instead of promising one pet stays S-tier forever.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
Why does this pet tier list use archetype names?
Creatures change with updates. Role labels like Tank Beast or AoE Cleaver stay useful even when specific species are buffed or nerfed.
What is the best pet role before Day 20?
Tank Beast or Guard Sentinel for defense, plus one Night Scout for daytime resources. Add Glass DPS once your walls funnel enemies reliably.
Is Glass DPS worth Ruby investment?
Only if you consistently use Attack then Stay to pull it back. Without command discipline, invest in Tank Beast or Guard Sentinel first.
How often should I update my roster using this list?
Review before Day 20, after losing two nights in a row, or when an update notes pet balance. One role swap per night makes testing fair.
Do co-op teams need Support Healer?
Often yes once multiple fragile DPS pets are active. Solo players can delay healer investment until mid-game or co-op sessions.
